Save it for a rainy day…

The East Coast is about to experience some major rainfall in the next few days thanks to a tropical storm making his way up the Atlantic. Although this summer was particularly dry and we could certainly use some rain, I am not looking forward to the next seven day (yes– it is projected to rain for seven days here in New York).

This kind of weather would make anyone want to curl up on the couch or under the covers and watch a mega marathon of chick flicks. Unfortunately most of us can’t spend our work week in PJs, but we can stay cozy and stylish even when the weather isn’t cooperating.

I am a huge fan of leggings (aren’t we all?) paired with soft knits when I am looking for ultimate comfort. This poncho is awesome on so many levels, but the rich burgundy color and the price are what sold me on it. Add in these super stylish rain boots (finally, a welly that won’t make us walk like Frankenstein) and you’ll be ready to take on all the elements.

I’m not so secretly obsessing over this M.Z. Wallace bag. I was introduced to it by my friend Jennie and ever since I have been dreaming of adding it to my closet. Quilted nylon bags are having a moment right now. I am seeing them everywhere!

STYLEgloss x Stephanie Linda Artistry Fall Makeup Report

If you follow me on social media or if you are an avid reader of this blog you will know that in addition to serving up style trends, I am a professional makeup artist. Makeup artistry is my true passion and I feel so extremely lucky to have such a thriving business with a fiercely loyal following– similarly to the amazing following I have here on STYLEgloss (thank you to all of my readers and clients!! You have no idea how much I love and appreciate you!).

Although many of you already knew that I am a makeup artist, most do not know that I have a M.A. in Journalism. I also owned a clothing store on Long Island for three years before I was a full-time, professional artist. I wanted to create an outlet for myself to combine my love for fashion, makeup and writing in a world where they could all coexist beautifully. Thus, STYLEgloss was born! I get really excited when I can combined these facets, especially when I talk about makeup on this blog! Today’s post is all about fall trends and how to wear them!

So for all of my STYLEgloss readers, meet Stephanie Linda Artistry and for all of my SLA clients, meet STYLEgloss!

Now that the introductions are over, let’s get to the good stuff!

It feels like fall has finally arrived here in New York. Have you switched over to fall hues in your makeup bag yet? Here are a few helpful tips to tackle the trends!
Lashes + Lips

A simple eye look (mascara and liner) and a deep lip is a super easy way to create a fall look. Here are some of my favorite lipsticks for fall and my all time favorite mascaras for any time of year.

Top Mascara Picks

Benefit They’re Real!, Maybelline Push Up Mascara, Wet N Wild Max Volume

Bold Brows
A bold but shapely brow is always on trend. Fill them in the foolproof way with Benefit’s Gimmie Brow. This tiny tube is packed with a brush-on fiber gel that not only fills in sparse brows but sets them in place. Also great is Anastasia’s Dip Brow, which requires a little more time and skill but also stays in place all day long. If you already have pretty full brows you can keep them shaped and in place with a clear brow gel like this one from NYX or this formula from Laura Mercier.

Flawless Face

Fall means that you will most likely have to change your foundation shade as our sun kissed tans fade away. If you think that you can get away with wearing your deeper shade (or wearing your lighter shade in the summer when you are tan), think again! The wrong shade of foundation will make you seem like you are wearing a mask and look super unnatural!

Sephora is a great place to shop if you need help selecting your shade. Not only are the salespeople helpful but they will also make a sample for your to take home. My best advice is to ask for two shades and apply them in natural light to see which shade is best. If you purchase the wrong shade you can always return your opened or used cosmetics to Sephora for a full refund.  Drugstores like CVS and Rite Aid have similar policies and will allow you to return cosmetics with a receipt.

Fall and winter months are typically times where you may experience some dry patches on your face. Be sure to moisturize everyday, even if you do not wear foundation. If you are super dry look for formulas that have a “luminous” or “dewy” finish which are usually more hydrating. Here are some foundations that I love and have a wide range of shades.

You had me at “merlot.”

With each passing season comes another hot, of-the-moment color that we all can’t get enough of. This summer it was bright teals and pinks and spring was filled with lots of yellow.

Fall brings a gorgeous array of hues that not only show up on the runways but also in nature’s beautiful cascade of foliage. I love the bold, rich jewel tone colors that we are seeing in stores now. Emeralds, royal blues, burnt oranges and browns are all great picks for this time of year and will flatter most completions. But my absolute favorite shade for fall is merlot. It is timeless and there are so many variations (burgundy, maroon, marsala, wine, dark red) to keep your wardrobe growing all season long.

Here are my favorite wine-hued picks in stores right now!

It’s here!

Essential Wear

There are some pieces so essential to a season that you find yourself reaching for them multiple times a week. Fall calls for leggings, boots and oversized everything. That goes for the coffee, too.

Here are my top eight, can’t-be-without style necessities that I will be living in for the next few months.

fallessentials

SCARF [etsy, $19], #PSL [starbucks], ANKLE BOOTS [charlotte russe, $18 on sale!], OVERSIZED SWEATER [nordstrom, $30, on sale!], BEANIE [nordstrom, $18], RIDING BOOTS [target, $50], LEGGINGS [matty m, $15], TOTE BAG [tory burch, $245]

Since my work “uniform” consists of all black everything, these leggings are a godsend. They are super thick, so they don’t become suddenly sheer when I bend over and they keep me nice and warm come the colder months. And yes, they are $15 at Costco and probably the best purchase you will make all year. Seriously, go ahead and buy two.

Footwear is a funny thing for me. I need comfort. But I also like to look stylish (of course). So finding a great flat or stacked heel boot that not only looks pretty but will also allow me to stand for 6+ hours at a time makes me a very happy makeup artist. Target has been my go-to for riding boots for the past few years. They are fashionable, comfortable and won’t make my credit card melt. And don’t you think they look like they cost way more than $50?!

A cozy sweater, roomy structured tote and snuggly scarf round out the rest of my essentials. I also love beanies during the fall because they are a totally acceptable way to hide a bad hair day. Or just a lazy day.

Oh, and the Pumpkin Spice Latte was probably a given, but I just needed to throw it in there for the newcomers that don’t know how much of a pedestal I put those things on.

Now you know.

DIY: Floral Wreath

It’s true what they say…

Why buy it for $20 online when you can drive to the craft store, search through dozens of aslies, stock up on everything you need for a project and make it yourself for $100?

I’ve fallen into that trap many times. But there is something so satisfying when you DIY a project yourself.

I love making these easy floral wreaths. I made one for spring/summer that I am about to retire so I figured I would cash in on some of the Labor Day Sales and craft one for fall.

Trust me, it looks more complicated than it actually is! Anyone can make a wreath like this, even if you are not so artistically inclined. I promise!

Here is what you’ll need:

– 1 styrofoam wreath (I am working on a medium sized one buy pick the size that will fit your door the best).

– a variety of stems (pick your favorite color palette. I did creams, oranges and purples, but deep reds, yellows, greens and blues are all beautiful this time of year).

**note- you’ll have to estimate the number of stems you will need for the size wreath you pick. Try to eyeball it but save your receipts incase you have anything you don’t use.

– hot glue gun

– spray paint (optional)

Here is my set up! All of my stems and my wreath. Before you get started you can opt to spray paint your wreath to disguise any spots that may end up a little bare at the end. Today I skipped this step but if I had more time I would have painted the wreath gold.

First thing you’ll have to do is remove the flowers from the stems. In most cases they will just pop right off but if they don’t you can just cut them.

Keep taking them all off until you have enough to complete your wreath. I used up all of my flowers and taupe leaves in this case.

Once you are all set with your flowers you can begin to lay our your wreath. The easiest way to do this is to stick the ends of each flower into the wreath where you want to glue them down. If you decide to change the position of any flower you can do it before actually gluing them down.

Keep going until your entire wreath is full. Once you have added all the flowers it’s time to glue them down! I like to pick a starting point and work my way around the wreath, taking out each flower individually, applying glue to the end and then inserting the flower stem back into the hole you created when you initially pushed it into the styrofoam.

After you have glued everything down it’s time to add the leaves! Insert and glue down leaves and fillers any place you think needs a little extra something!

Check to make sure every flower and leaf is secure (don’t worry— the hot glue will withstand wind, rain and even snow!! Your wreath will be just fine on your door all season long, although you may think it seems a little flimsy).

You can add a pretty bow or glue down other pieces like glittered pumpkins or acorns. I kept mine simple this time but a burlap bow would be super cute!

All finished! How easy was that?!

Let me know if you decide to make your own! I purchased all my supplies at Michaels today because stems were 40% off and I had an additional 20% off coupon. The stems and the wreath cost me $35. I had the hot glue gun already so total cost was only $35!

And just for some more inspiration here is the spring version I made back in April!

Barn Jackets

IMG_7819

Images c/o Pinterest. I do not own them.

A closet staple that I have always been keen on is the quilted barn jacket. It is a simple piece that is casual yet tailored enough to be styled so many different ways. You will get a ton of use out of this coat in both the fall and the spring. I can throw on some leggings, flats, a simple sweater and this jacket and look super pulled together without even trying. A barn jacket has become part of my unofficial fall “uniform” along with riding boots and blanket scarfs.

Here are a few of my personal picks for fabulous barn jackets for any budget.

Joan Rivers Quilted Barn Jacket, $69.12 [ON SALE]

I have wanted to order this jacket many times but I keep resisting because I already have a black one that I love! But when I look at all of the bright color ways that this brand has to offer I can’t help but salivate.  I may have to just take advantage of the Labor Day sale price and order the Khaki. Or the red. Or both! You can’t beat the price!

Ralph Lauren Turnkey Barn Jacket, $84.90 [ON SALE!]

I love the pop of print from the lining! Perfect dressed up or down. Only available in size small right now, but if that is your size  you are in luck because this is a great price!

LL Bean Women’s Quilted Riding Jacket, $139 [FREE SHIPPING]

Don’t you love this color? Shown here in the Dark Ivy, this coat comes in five color ways and in both misses’ and petite sizing. It also fashionable and functional with a an insulated lining. Does’t it just look warm?

DKNY Knit Trim Quilted Jacket, $236 [FREE SHIPPING]

This variation of the barn jacket is great for curvy or hourglass figures. The belt will help to create a waist and maintain your shape while wearing this otherwise boxy style.

Burberry Diamond Quilted Jacket, $595

Perhaps the most iconic quilted jacket and a true super splurge! I have the older version of this coat and I have worn it so many times that it has paid for itself for sure. The tailoring on this jacket just hugs the body beautifully. If you are looking to treat yourself this should do the trick!

Which one are you picking up this weekend?! Tell me in the comments!

September… Already!

Can you believe it? Another summer down! Where did the time go?

Seriously… It feels like I just put away my Christmas decorations.

I’m not complaining, though! As much as I love a great book by the pool, I love fall more. Something about the hope of new beginnings and extra time spent with family and friends indoors makes me giddy. Don’t you still feel like a school kid each year when September inches back up on us? Sometimes all you really need is a new pair of sneakers, some notebooks and a sharp haircut to be ready to take on the world!

I like to use this month as a time to reflect on what’s happened over the past three months or so. I find that summer tends to escape us very quickly as we enjoy the carefree spirit that seems to be cast upon the entire world as we soak up those dog days. I am reminded today as I check my calendar that in a few weeks we will have pushed our shorts and flip flops to the back of the closet in exchange for cozy sweaters and boots.

At the start of every month I set goals for myself (both personally and for my businesses) and I try to set aside time for things that I know I would like to do. Sure, a week long tropical getaway would be nice but I know that won’t be happening any time soon (at least not until wedding season is over). But I still like to set time aside for me, whether that is a few hours here and there to indulge in a great book or to meet up with friends that I haven’t seen in a while.

It is very easy to get swept away in the day-to-day and forget to take care of ourselves, especially during these next few weeks when children are settling back into routines and we begin realizing that our carefree disposition is behind us.

Today I am pausing to write myself a “fall bucket list” of sorts. Things I want to accomplish in my business (finally finish my new website!) and for me (read a few books, finish some Pinterest projects, organize my closet). I have found great success in writing things down and keeping that paper visible each day. This keeps me focused on what is important to me and serves as a daily reminder for me to keep pushing forward.

This month is all about reflection and projection. What did you accomplish already and where do you want to go? In business? In life? As a parent? As a spouse? As an individual?

September can sometimes become a “lost” month. With so much going on it too seems to disappear as quickly as it arrived. I know that I won’t be letting these next four weeks slip by. How about you? What is on your bucket list for fall?

If you are making a list today too please let me know! I would love to cheer you on learn what your goals are and what activities you will be doing. Of course my list is going to include the obligatory pumpkin picking trip and even some apple pie making. OH… and to drink as much pumpkin spice as I can possible consume before I turn into a #PSL at midnight.

Happy September!

Labor Day Sale Picks: Pier 1

Nothing makes me happier than a great Labor Day sale. All this week I am scouting out my favorite finds from sales that have already started. Today we kick off the week with one of my main obsessions in life, Pier 1.

Pier 1 is offering 20% off select items. If you are a Pier 1 card holder the best day of the week to shop the sale would be tomorrow. You’ll save an additional 10% since it is Platinum Perks Tuesday! Click here to see all the offerings and keep reading to find out which ones I have eyes on!

Addyson Chair, $314

This chair is everything. It would add a pop of color to any room without being too overwhelming. In person the print is STUNNING. It would be beautiful in an entry way or reading nook.

Antler Wall Panel, $215

Visit my house and you’ll quickly learn that my decor style is rustic-chic. I love this “reclaimed wood” wall art because it would make my husband happy (he’s a hunter) while still fitting in with the rest of our house.

Mr. & Mrs. Pillows, $24-$28

LOVE this set! Would also make a beautiful wedding or shower gift! They also come in a “His and Her” set and in black so you can match it back to your bedding. I just love anything champagne, so I picked this color way.

Happy Wall Decor, $40

An inexpensive and sweet reminder of what is important! Everyone should have one of these signs in their home. Also a great gift for a housewarming or newly engaged couple that won’t break the bank!!

Words of Welcome Doormat, $30

Usher in the season with this pretty doormat. I love that the natural coir (which I find cleans off soles the best!) is surrounded by rubber, making this a mat that will last a while.

Pre-Lit Vine Pumpkins, $50-$80

Last year I bought a vine pumpkin from Michael’s but it was not indoor/outdoor like these are. I love the idea of stacking three and placing them right outside my front door. Perhaps with a few straw bales and real pumpkins later on in the season. These are a rustic and simple way to decorate for fall and can be reused year after year.

Witch Hat Wreath, $56

Seriously… I just love this wreath! How cute?! I have a version from last year’s line sans witch hat. My husband calls it my “prized possession” because I take such good care of it. What can I say? I love Halloween! Pier 1 wreaths are exceptional quality. All of the outdoor items I have ever purchased from Pier 1 look brand new season after season.

There you have it! My favorites that I am sure to be checking out tomorrow! Did you shop the sale yet? See anything you know you’ll be adding to your cart? Let me know which pieces you are loving!
